Navigating Corporate Culture Gender Stereotypes at Work
Navigating Corporate Culture Gender Stereotypes at Work In 2009 do gender stereotypes still play a role in the modern workplace? A recent article in the college magazine Jungle Campus, called Watch Your Step highlighted that although women have made significant leaps in the business world; they lag behind men in pay and leadership positions. Are you being held back by stereotypes in your career? Many women say yes. The article highlights a 2004 study by Catalyst, in which 46 percent of women chose gender-based stereotyping as a top barrier to advancement compared to only five percent of men.Weigh in on the issue and comment (below). I did. As part of the panel of experts quoted in the article, I agreed with some of the stereotypes and disagreed with others:Stereotypes I Agree With:Women are less aggressive I have coached many of my female clients to aim higher when asking for a raise, promotion or more responsibility.Women underplay their professional accomplishments Many times I have had to quote author Peggy Klaus and remin d my female clients that, Its not bragging if its true. Unfortunately when women achieve great success they are afraid it will threaten others. In reality, people are impressed by your achievements when presented in a factual way. It can demonstrate confidence and self-assuredness, which only help your career!Stereotypes I Disagree With:Women are catty with each other The women Ive worked with in my corporate career have been just as helpful as the male bosses and coworkers. It hasnt been about gender but about finding supportive mentors willing to help me succeed.Women cant take criticism I think this is a misconception because women tend to question the criticism and want specific examples. Its good career development to understand feedback you receive. How else are you supposed to improve?Read the article (on page 11) and hear from other experts such as Gail Evans, former CNN executive and author of Play Like a Man Win Like a Woman and Barbara Adachi, Chief Talent Officer at Deloitte and national managing partner of their Initiative for the Retention and Advancement of Women (WIN).I invite you to comment on your experience with gender in the workplace and if you agree or disagree with the stereotypes. Edit Your Resume Like a Pro
Edit Your Resume Like a Pro Editing is part of writing an effective resume. Writing an effective resume is about more than just creating a resume once and distributing it to prospective employers. An executive resume writer will tell you how important it is to review your resume and edit it often. Unfortunately, many people find one of their biggest weaknesses is editing. Hiring an executive resume service can provide the assistance you need, but learning to edit on your own can be invaluable. Focus on Your Achievements Many individuals focus on what their responsibilities have been at their jobs, rather than what they have actually achieved. Prospective employers want to know what your skills are and how you have used those skills to accomplish things in your past work history. Think about the requirements of the job to which you are applying and focus on the skills you need to meet the demands of the position. Market Yourself Your resume is your chance to sell yourself and tell your prospective employers why they should consider hiring you, rather than one of the other individuals who have applied. You may easily tell potential employers what you can do, but you also need to show them how well you can do it. When writing an effective resume, you need to show them how well you have done in past positions. Quantify your value, donât just state it. Remove Irrelevant Material An executive resume writer can go through your resume and help you pick out the items that arenât relevant to the job for which you are applying. Many people create a single resume and try to distribute it to all of their prospects. However, employers are looking for the best fit for the job. If your resume is filled with information that doesnât relate to the open position, your resume is more likely to find its way to the bottom of the pile, rather than in the interview pile. Donât Give It All Away A resume is meant to be a snapshot of your work history to get employers to call you. For this reason, itâs important to make sure you donât give too much away. Make sure you leave them with questions so they want to talk to you. Itâs important to make sure you can work on selling yourself at the interview to close the deal. Check for Common Mistakes Grammar and spelling errors can be devastating to your ability to get a job. An executive resume service will be able to identify these problems, but anyone with a firm understanding of the English language can go over your resume and point out potential issues. You should also double check names, addresses and other important information for accuracy. Editing your resume is one of the most important steps you can take when applying for a job. Writing an effective resume will help set you apart from the other people applying for a job and can increase your chances of landing the job you want.

Writing the One-Employer Executive Resume
Writing the One-Employer Executive ResumeTheres something to be said about sticking with one employer throughout your entire career. You know the companys corporate culture, have built amazing relationships with members of the staff, and have the benefit of building up a great retirement package. For some people, the goal of sticking with one employer takes shape the moment they determine their career and find the job of their dreams. But oftentimes, this goal doesnt always see itself throughwhether the company goes out of business or it just no longer suits a professional goal.So now, after working your way up to the executive level, youre no longer employed. How can you convince a companyby utilizing your resumethat having worked for only one employer provided you with the wealth of experience they want you to bring to the table?List Job, Then Include Professional TitlesOne of the most important factors in showing an employer that youve earned your executive title is by showcasing y our growth in your field. Most professionals jump from company to company to acquire growth, but a select fewlike youare able to rise with one employer. But a problem that arises from this esteemed privilege is, at first glance, your resume can appear to be very lean. A great way to beef it up is by listing all of your relevant professional titles within the company.Lets say you are a VP of Public Relations for XYZ Pharmaceuticals who has worked your way up from Public Relations Assistant to Public Relations Coordinator, and then to Public Relations Manager, and then to Director of Public Relations. You can show your growth by listing XYZ Pharmaceuticals as your employer then, in reverse chronological order, list your various positions and years worked. Next, underneath each position, list your accomplishment-driven bullet points, being sure to note how you ascended to each successive role.Stress Your Training and DiversityAnother downside to working for only one employer throughout y our entire career is the perception that future employers might have about youthat youre a one-dimensional employeesomeone who not only has no experience guiding multiple organizational cultures but one who may have been promoted simply due to relationships within the company.Having diverse experience is important in qualifying you for the complex role youll serve at an executive level because others competing for the same role may possess it.To give yourself some leverage, its good to show that your high value is exactly what made the company hold on to you for so long. They trusted your wise direction and chose to promote you as you effectively guided it toward success. You also want to showcase your formal training and list degrees you acquiredcorrelating them to your promotions. Also, show that any changes in company ownership merely gave you more room to spread your wings. In the end, prospective employers need to know that your sticking with one company helped you to gain a comp rehensive, in-depth understanding of that one organization. You had the opportunity to become one with its mission and purposewhich now gives you an impressive advantage over your competition. Its important to remember to brand your resume before applying to each new position for more information on branding check out my recent article 5 Key Areas to Target When Branding Your Resume. 5 Expert Ways to Level-up Support for Working Moms This Mothers Day
5 Expert Ways to Level-up Support for Working Moms This Mothers DayMothers Day is just around the corner. Its no secret many working mothers struggle to balance their professional and parental responsibilities. HR professionals cant ignore the unique challenges they face. Its important they look for opportunities to provide additional support whenever possible. But since most companies already offer maternity leave or flexible work schedules, the question becomes, whats the next step? We asked experts what organizations can and should do to make working moms lives easier. In honor of Mothers Day, we compiled a list of ways organizations can improve the workplace for mothers every day. Here are the excellent suggestions they gave us1. Let go of assumptionsDont offer promotions and assignments based on whether you think working mothers can or cant because of family obligations. You should never create a narrative for your workforce based on your own preferences and assumptions. Evalu ate working mothers performance without considering their constraints as you perceive them. Take people at face value. Dont assume you know where theyre at just because you might have known someone in their situation or you maybe once breezed by a similar place. Let them tell you who they are and what they can do. Eileen Scully, founder of The Rising Tides2. Set expectations earlyEven the most organized moms sometimes deal with life imploding. Many people will only address these situations when they happen versus having a larger discussion with their manager to understand what to do in these situations. For example, schools ask for volunteer time or parent attendance at special events and it can be challenging to know where the balance is, especially if youre already given flex work hours. Having proactive discussions to understand expectations can save everyone angst and concern. If an employee needs to miss work for a commitment at school, simply sharing the details and putting a game plan in place ensures work still gets done. Melissa Cappas Masse, partner and senior managing director at WinterWymanDont wait until theres a family emergency to discuss what employees are expected to do. workingmomsClick To Tweet3. Have humane scheduling practicesInconsistent work schedules create a lot of avoidable problems for working mothers in hourly positions. Its difficult to plan your finances if you have wild fluctuations in the number of hours youre working. And its often more difficult for working mothers in these roles to schedule babysitters, doctor appointments, parent-teacher meetings, or any of the other obligations that come with being a parent. I think there are three concrete steps businesses can take to make their scheduling policies more accommodating to working mothers.Provide a good faith estimate of hours employees can expect each week and notify them in advance on weeks theyre going to be scheduled for fewer hours, so that they can plan their finances a ccordingly. Give staff their schedules further in advance so parents can plan out their kids schedules. Implement a shift swap policy that allows staff to trade shifts they dont want with one another, giving parents more flexibility.Henry Updegrave, absatzwirtschaft manager at Nowsta4. Create a relaxation spaceMy business partner and I know how stressful parenting can be, which is why we recently set up a room for employees to relax and recharge their jets. We moved a few things around and created a special relax room in our office for employees to use whenever theyre feeling overwhelmed, stressed or just tired in general. The relax room includes mattresses, dim lighting, massage chairs, speakers playing relaxing sounds, and cold beverages. We also made sure to put the beds on adjustable frames so employees can lay down and relax yet still work if they want. So far, the relax room has had a tremendous impact on productivity and stress levels. I can tell our employees are in much bet ter moods and like taking breaks in there. Matthew Ross, co-owner and COO at The Slumber YardDont let parenting stress follow moms to work. Create a space in the office for them to relax.Click To Tweet5. Schedule company events during work hoursIts great when companies want to do something nice for employees such as holiday parties, happy hours, employee engagement activities, trainings, dinners, and events that bring employees together. However, when you have these events outside office hours working moms often struggle to find childcare. If companies must host events outside normal business hours, give plenty of advance notice or allow moms to invite their families (especially children) or, at least, dont make the events mandatory. Better yet, set up an employee engagement committee with a balance of all demographics, ages, and stages of life to get a complete picture of what works best for your employees.
